Update a Pivot Table in Excel

The pivot table does not automatically reflect changes made to the data set. To see the changes in your pivot table, refresh it or update its data source.

When you modify text or numbers in your data set, the pivot table must be refreshed.

1. Click any cell inside the pivot table.

2. Right-click and click on Refresh.

๐Ÿ’Ž Auto Update Pivot Table

To automatically refresh a pivot table when opening an Excel file, complete the steps below.

3. Click any cell inside the pivot table.

4. On the PivotTable Analyze tab, locate the PivotTable group and click Options.

Excel shows the PivotTable Options dialog box.

5. Within the Data tab, enable the โ€œRefresh data when opening the fileโ€ option.

6. Click OK.

From now on, whenever you open this Excel file, Excel will automatically refresh this pivot table and any other pivot tables that use the same data.

๐Ÿ’Ž Change Data Source in Pivot Table

When you change your data by adding or deleting rows or columns, update the pivot table to include the new data.

1. Click any cell inside the pivot table.

2. On the PivotTable Analyze tab, click Change Data Source in the Data group.

Tip: Convert your data into a table before creating a pivot table. This ensures that your data source refreshes automatically when rows or columns are added or deleted. This can save time. You still have to refresh, though.
